Description
Launched in 1948 at the London Motor Show, the Jaguar XK120 was initially penned as a testbed for the new Jaguar XK engine, a 3.4-liter inline six that was intended to put Jaguar ahead of the competition for years to come without much revision. The prototype received an immense amount of positive press and caused such a sensation from the public that it persuaded Jaguar founder and Chairman, WIlliam Lyons, to put it into production.
The nomenclature used in the name signified two things: XK, for the engine that powered it, and 120, for the top speed. With such a high top speed in 1948, the XK120 became the fastest production car in the world at the time of its release.
Now offered for sale, Blue Chip is proud to present this 1952 Jaguar XK120 roadster as a testament to the history of high speed. After spending nearly three decades under one caretaker, this example has spent the last 5 years in the collection of a meticulous enthusiast and is now ready for a new owner.
In 1989, this XK120 underwent a comprehensive driver-level refurbishment. The restoration included minor body repairs, a bare-metal repaint in a striking two-stage red, a new tan soft top and upholstery, and a thorough rebuild of the 3.4L inline-six engine with a later-style cylinder head. The brakes and front suspension were also refreshed to ensure optimal performance.
Over the past 35 years, this stunning Jaguar has covered approximately 6,000 miles and has been lovingly stored under cover indoors, preserving its fantastic condition. Originally finished in grey, the car's transformation included precise metal work followed by a meticulous body-off repaint. The restoration addressed dents in the doors and a damaged area of the hood, although rust removal was not necessary.
The roadster rides on painted steel wheels with polished hubcaps fitted with radial tires. The rear wheels are elegantly covered with full spats, and the brightwork has been re-chromed.
Inside, the cabin has been reupholstered in tan leather, maintaining its period-correct appeal. The factory 4-spoke steering wheel and Smiths gauges, which were inspected and repaired, add to the authenticity and charm of the interior.
The heart of this Jaguar, a 3.4L inline-six engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, was also overhauled in 1989. The rebuild, performed by Gran Turismo Jaguar of Ohio, included a later-style cylinder head, new pistons, rings, bearings, a balanced flywheel, and recoated exhaust manifolds. An oil and filter change was completed in November 2017, ensuring the engine remains in excellent condition.
Now displaying 86,093 miles, this 1952 XK120 is available with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a refurbishment book with photos and invoices of work, service manuals, a tool kit, and a spare tire.
