Description
In the 1980’s, if you wanted a fast German sedan that wasn’t a BMW, you had to buy a Mercedes and take it to the renowned tuning house AMG, where they could then turn your new Mercedes into something more worthy of a NASA certification than a driver’s license. In 1988, however, Mercedes set out to change that with an all-new performance variant of the W124 E-Class. Badged the 500E, this new performance variant set out to be the spiritual successor to the legendary 300 SEL of the late 60’s and would be an unrivaled combination of luxury and performance.
At the same time, however, Mercedes was developing the new generation of S-Class and did not have the capacity to produce a low-volume performance variant of the E-Class within their own factories. Thus, a partnership was necessary, and since AMG didn’t have the capacity at that time to produce the volume that Mercedes needed, the German auto manufacturer turned to Porsche to develop their new M5 competitor. Porsche was responsible for the assembly and modification of the current W124 E-Class to fit a new 5.0-liter V8 into its engine bay along with an array of various other performance parts. Services performed by Porsche engineers included the strengthening and modification of the body shell, retuning of the suspension, and the fitment of ventilated disc brakes at all four corners. As a result, the 500E sat 56mm wider and 23mm lower than the standard 300E, and even with an additional 485 lbs of body fat, it would rocket from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and top out at an electronically-limited 155 mph. With an official total of 9,624 ever being built, the 500E is a limited-run super sedan that would rival even the fastest exotics of its era.
Blue Chip is proud to offer this 1992 example with just 64,504 miles from new. For more information, please reach out to our sales team at sales@bluechipfleet.com.
