2005 Porsche Carrera GT

The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT stands as a testament to Porsche's adaptability and engineering excellence. Originally conceived in response to FIA rule changes that halted plans for a new Le Mans prototype in 1999, Porsche ingeniously repurposed its 5.5-liter V-10 engine for the Carrera GT. This engine, boasting a 68-degree configuration and 605 horsepower, was paired with a six-speed manual transmission featuring a Porsche carbon-ceramic-composite clutch, delivering power to the rear wheels.

Constructed around a carbon-fiber monocoque and subframe, the Carrera GT weighed just 2,755 pounds. Its race-inspired suspension included inboard rocker arms and staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear magnesium-alloy wheels, coupled with carbon-ceramic brakes featuring eight-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the rear. These components contributed to the Carrera GT's impressive performance, with a 0-60 mph sprint time of four seconds and a top speed nearing 200 mph.

On the track, the Carrera GT set numerous records, including a lap time of 7:28 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife while piloted by racing legend Walter Rohrl. Despite its racing pedigree, the Carrera GT offered luxury-grade comfort with power features, airbags, climate control, and Bose audio. Notably, the beechwood shifter knob paid homage to Porsche's racing heritage.
