1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

The final iteration of the air-cooled Porsche 911, the 993-generation, was arguably the last “true” 911 to leave Stuttgart. Step inside one, and it’s as if you are in a time capsule, transported back to the days of analog, intuition, and intentional design.

The cabin is minimal by today’s standards, yet it holds timeless elegance within the analog dials, manual switches and buttons, and the refreshing lack of an oversized LCD infotainment screen. Upon closing the door behind you, it makes a wonderful “clunk” sound, letting the driver know that the door is neither too heavy nor too flimsy, and the very mechanical noise of the door latch reminds you that this is not your neighbor’s brand-new 911. To the left of the steering wheel, turn the key in the ignition and the engine roars to life while the dashboard illuminates and the dials in the gauges return to their respective positions. The engine cooling fan whirs as you pull away, the steering is perfectly intuitive, and a remarkable feeling of connection to the road is elicited.

Of the 993-generation, the 911 Carrera S is one of the rarer and more highly sought after versions to be produced. Only ever produced from 1997 to 1998, production numbers for the Carrera S amounted to just 1,752 examples for the North American market and 3,714 examples worldwide. The 993 Carrera S received the aggressive looks and wider, flared fenders from the 911 Turbo while still retaining rear-wheel-drive and the naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six. The wider fenders gave the Carrera S the ability to wear wider tires, and the extra rubber over the standard Carrera meant that handling and cornering was superb. Equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the Carrera S provided owners with a visceral driving experience, one that was seemingly lost in the incoming era of water-cooled 911’s.

Now offered for sale, Blue Chip is proud to present this 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S with just 33,863 original miles. Finished in sophisticated Black over Black Leather, this example is highlighted by the classic 17-inch ‘Turbo Twist’ alloy wheels finished in Silver and Porsche Sport Dual Exhaust system. Inside the cabin, optional Racing Style Sport Seats are finished in a Black Leather upholstery that extends to the dashboard, headliner, steering wheel, and gear selector. Additional features include wheel caps with the colored Porsche Crest, heated windshield washers, power sunroof, power/heated side mirrors, automatic climate control, and headlight washers.

Performance is handled by a 3.6-liter, naturally aspirated flat-six engine that produces 282 horsepower and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Power is sent to the rear wheels, and an optional Torque Limited Slip Differential with ABD aids in reducing wheelspin when coming off the line and out of corners. As tested in 1997, the Carrera S will go from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, will run a quarter-mile in 13.6 seconds, and with enough roadway in front of you, will top out at about 155 mph. At speed, a split-grill rear spoiler is hydraulically raised to increase downforce and improve handling.

This 1998 911 Carrera S comes complete with two keys, manufacturer’s literature, the original window sticker, a CARFAX report, and a clean Colorado title. Recent service includes a full engine-out reseal, clutch replacement, transmission service, replacement of brake hoses, replacement of front and rear brakes, mount and balance of four new tires, four wheel alignment, and much more. As reported on the CARFAX, this Carrera S has been involved in a minor accident, of which the seller regarded that the vehicle was backed into while parked in a parking lot and was only damaged cosmetically.
