Description
At the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2017, McLaren launched the latest model in their Super Series, the 720S. Set to replace the outgoing 650S, the 720S was expected to be a rear-wheel-drive, mid-engined sports car powered by a revised edition of the twin-turbo V8 from the 650S. On paper, it looked as if the 720S was going to be simply another mid-range sports car to compete with the Ferrari 488 GTB and the Lamborghini Huracan.
Once the car was released, however, it was revealed that McLaren’s latest offering was much, much more than that. Whereas the 650S shared design similarities to the previous Mp4-12C, the 720S was a complete redesign, shaped by aerodynamics and inspired by the streamlined features of a Great White shark. Now called the Monocage II, the chassis was a stronger, lighter version of the carbon fiber tub featured in the 650S and included A-pillars and a structured roof support for increased safety and rigidity. The 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 from the 650S was now a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 that produced 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. At just 3,167 lbs, the 720S was lighter than both of its competitors, and the hydraulic suspension had evolved to utilize variable dampers and accelerometers to improve ride comfort and road stability.
As a result, the 720S could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a neck-snapping 2.5 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 10.1 seconds at 141.5 mph. During testing done by MotorTrend, the 720S set the fastest lap for a production car around Big Willow racetrack at a time of 1:21:75 seconds. In comparison, the fastest lap recorded by the million-dollar Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar was 1:23:54. So for a bit more than a quarter of the price in 2018, you could have a technological masterpiece that was capable of beating a hybrid hypercar around a track.
Now offered for sale, Blue Chip is proud to present this 2018 720S Performance finished in stunning Silica White over a Black Alcantara and Leather interior with interior accents and stitching in McLaren Orange.
